Indonesia’s capital, sprawling Jakarta has hurtled into the 21st-century at a startling rate. Rapidly expanding, it is an eclectic mix of cultures with an electric clubbing scene including the EX at Plaza Indonesia mall and those near Blok M mall, popular with expats. Jakarta shopping is great, with modern malls all over, interspersed with traditional markets, some underground.
Thousands of Jakarta restaurants and cheap street food provide tourists with tons of choices. Little Japan is best for sushi (and karaoke), while colorful Chinatown has fantastic dim sum. Buzzing around all are bajaj, Indonesia’s equivalent of tuk-tuks.
The main Jakarta sights include Monas National Monument in green Merdeka square. Spectacularly lit at night, it has a deck with fantastic city views. Opposite is the presidential palace, patrolled by the national guard. The oldest part is Batavia – the city’s Dutch Colonial name – and is home to the Jakarta History Museum.
Away from the bustle is Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, a suburban park celebrating Indonesia’s rich culture through museums, dance and film, centered around a large lake with Indonesia-shaped islands. Ancol Dream Park also features waterparks, beaches and amusement rides.
Traffic can be manic, so leave time after checking out of your Booking.com accommodation in Jakarta to get to Soekarno Hatta or Halim Perdanakusuma Airport.
Chinatown, Kota Tua, the National Monument and shopping...
Chinatown, Kota Tua, the National Monument and shopping malls especially in Kelapa Gading are well worth a visit. Apart from that, there is really nothing else to see and do within the city. I do recommend getting a taxi to Halim Station and taking a journey on the "Whoosh" high speed train to Bandung and have a look around. Bandung is well worth a visit for shopping, Braga Street, Jalan Asia-Africa and Gedung Sate.
One has to be careful when choosing a place to eat. Street food is full of risk - despite it being cheap. I ate Sio-may from a hawker and had diarrhoea for 4 days. Restaurants and food outlets in hotels and malls are the safest, along with any other clean, well known outlets.
Travelling in Jakarta itself is a nightmare. Traffic jams and delays make a relatively short distance journey, take a very long time. There are plenty of taxis and gojek - motorcycle taxis.
The air quality in the city is apallingly bad. As with my daughter, first came the sore throat, then the persistent dry cough, then the phlegm on the lungs and the coughing throughout the night. The air quality in the city is so bad, it constitutes a health hazard. Any rivers and streams are also heavily polluted - they look disgusting.
They proliferation of beggars and people looking for money especially from European tourists becomes irritating as it can easily turn into an aggressive situation. It's better not to walk anywhere.
Local attitude toward European/Australian/NZ tourists (in fact any white skin tourists) appears on the surface to be one of mild annoyance or in cases aggression. We were shouted at in a shopping mall to go home - very hurtful and embarrassing. My daughter who is married to an Indonesian regularly receives abuse. It seems a significant number of people resent outsiders and those who cannot speak their language.
All in all, we will never return to Jakarta.

Jakarta is very big and not much to see. Other than high buildings in south which is not really my interest. I managed to save my trip by going to north of Jakarta and visit fishermen. I can though recommend the city if you are for shopping and friendly people

I saw a different side to Jakarta this trip as I had a day to do non-work related stuff. Found some amazing independent coffee bars and had an amazing dinner at Le Quartier, a French restaurant with excellent steaks. Definitely recommended for a visit. The only major downside is the traffic which is absolutely horrendous. Pick an area you want to explore and stay around there. I stayed a night in a lovely boutique hotel called the Gunawarman. Highly recommended.

Jakarta, the business city where you can have a choice of various restaurants in malls and several areas and batik at Thamrin City. The USA Cultural Centre is on the third floor of Pacific Place mall and offers a lot of free events.
I live south of the southern border of Jakarta, so I visit the city a lot. I only stayed at a hotel because I had two events going on in an area and I needed a place to do my powernaps (it would be too far to go home to do the naps).
Jakarta is a business city with interesting places to eat, for example jalan Agus Salim (jalan Sabang) in central Jakarta or jalan Cipete Raya in South Jakarta. The malls also offer a wide range of restaurants.
As for tourism, I like the old city (TransJakarta bus corridor 1). For green lungs I would suggest Ragunan (TransJakarta bus corridor 6) which is also the home of the Zoo. I like the area of Jalan Wahid Hasyim that offiers a wide range of hotels.
Taman Mini Indonesia Indah is a nice open air museum with sample of traditional buildings of almost all provinces of Indonesia, so very nice to take pictures.
Just beware of traffic jams and the odd/even number plate system (ganjil/genap) that is valid from 6-10 am and 4-9 pm in several main streets. We usually don't say, how far is it, but how long will it take me to get there.
The onlline hailing system Gojek or Grab is very useful to have.
If you have to be in Jakarta, go for the food or shopping. If not, better go to Yogja or Bali

If you have a personal-click, if you do need to be there, or if you have things to do its a very interesting city no doubt, If it is only for holiday fly away as soon as possible. Try any other Airport to enter Indonesia and start from there.

It's always interesting to see a nation's capital — but...
It's always interesting to see a nation's capital — but other than that, there's not much to be said for Jakarta. The old city is a bit grim – must likely because the whole city is literally sinking, in particular the waterfront region. There are slums all over the place — as we found out when we accidentally walked into a very dangerous one while searching for a Sim card. We planned for a 48 hour layover just to get a sense for the place, and it was 40 hours too long.
The main enjoyable thing is going to malls. Personally as a European, mall culture isn't really something that's huge where I'm from and I wouldn't normally advocate it. In Jakarta it's a huge part of the culture of the middle class (there's a great Guardian article on the topic) and they're worth seeing. Also because they're pretty much the only enjoyable thing we found to do there.
Very pleasant hotel, nice staff, spacy room with a nice view, very good bed, tasty Indonesian breakfast with different free options for directly made different side meals.
It is a 4* hotel that feels like a very welcoming Homestay.
With Covid-19 in 2021 i had to stay 7 days in my room of this hotel so i didnt see anything outside my room and i couldnt use the swimming pool.
It was the main reason to comback to this hotel to see what i had missed then.
Now i am coming back for the second time to this hotel as i like the atmosphere very much.
Look past some wear and tear, and you'll find a stylish hotel for a pretty good price. Room is comfortable, one of the few hotels that I manage to sleep through the night (read: bed is good for me, medium hardness, not overly soft). Indonesian hospitality is some of the best and friendliest, and this hotel is no exception. If we ever find ourselves coming to Jakarta again, we're definitely staying here.
The staff was extra helpful and polite, hotel might seem a bit old-fashioned but the room is cozy and has been refurbished to suit the modern era, albeit smaller than most 5 star hotels at this price. Swimming pool & recreational area is definetely the main highlight, very suitable for a big family. Gym is top notch. Only downside is they removed non-halal options for breakfast for no apparent reason.
In the confusion and the trafic jam of Jakarta, this is a superb place to relax.
The facilities are located in a inner side of the hotel and this allows you to stay isolated of the noise of the city.
The swimming pool is huge and the hotel has also a nice gym.
The restaurant at ground zero is serving every day from 11am to 10pm and has an excellent Indonesian cuisine.
The breakfast is also superb.
I especially enjoyed the fact that the hotel allowed me to bring my furry pet friend and keep him in my room unlike other hotels in Jakarta or Indonesia, most of which don't allow travelers with pets. There was only a small pet deposit fee that is typically being refunded upon check-out. All hotel staff knew about my pet and provided everything we needed to feel well accommodated in their space.
It’s quite a new hotel. It’s located in a not to busy side lane. Since most people use Taxis to get around Jakarta it’s a good location to stay.
The stuff has been wonderful and very helpful. It was the last stop on our honeymoon in Indonesia, bevor returning back to Europe. The hotel surprised us with a lovely little cake and congratulated us :). It was clean and the interior looks nice.
We loved the unique concept of the hotel interior, blending Indonesian and Western cultures and design elements; amazing breakfast, especially Indonesian health drinks, local fruits, selection of dumplings, cheeses, Japanese breakfast choices; we loved the pool on the 4th floor; we loved the location and, amazing staff members; unforgettable view, super comfy pillows and blankets.
Beautiful hotel I had a big room with a garden. Such a place in London would cost 4 times as much. It's in the trendy middle class area of Mentang. However the hotel is in a quiet area. Staff are fantastic & friendly. Breakfast was fantastic. The roof top bar had great cocktails. I had a Margarita pizza the best I've tasted. One of the best hotels I've stayed in.
Wow.. Everything was just perfect! I didn't really expect much from Pop hotel before, I've been traveling to some cities in Java, Sulawesi, Sumatera and Bali. I think, Pop hotel kelapa gading probably THE BEST POP HOTEL in Indonesia. Clean, spacious room, comfort, cool AC, Hot water, Good breakfast and the mall is just next door from the hotel. Well done!!
Good Hotel at a very good location. Friendly staff, good breakfast and well maintained cleanliness of rooms and bathrooms. I stayed here for 5 nights. Size of the room was decent though not big. Overall a good and affordable place to stay in a nice location. Around 5-10 minutes walking distance from Plaza Indonesia and Grand Indonesia shopping malls.
The hotel doesn't provide breakfast. There's a caffee at the hotel. However, it opens at 9 a.m which is a let down. Fortunately, there are some cheap, outside options in around the hotel. The availability of Netflix and YouTube through Smart TV in the room is a huge bonus. Not to mention that it's close to a park where we can have morning walk.
The hotel is situated in Central Jakarta and is a perfect hub for exploring the city's finest shopping centres, such as Plaza Indonesia, Grand Indonesia, and Tanah Abang. You can indulge in a wide range of traditional and international cuisine at the nearby restaurants.
Very nice Hotel in the business district. Staff was very helpful. I had to book a train ticket and since the website was only in Indonesian, they went through every step with me. Bed was very comfortable, everything was modern and clean.
- Location
- you can walk 25 minutes or take MRT to the hotel next to BNI city station (airport train).Easy to airport.
- walking distance to Grand Indonesia Mall, Plaza Indonesia , Sarinah Mall etc
Very friendly and helpful staff. Delicious breakfast for a good price. The rooms are clean, beds are comfortable, the AC is very good. One of the best hotels we've had in Indonesia. 10/10
Great English-every time I had a question they did their best. Also hotel is in less congested area -traffic around some other hotels can make just getting to lobby a wait in traffic.
